A Dietitian's Chanukah Party

Ever wonder what a Chanukah party looks like in my house? (sans the doughnuts and latkes)

With a weeks worth of parties and too many doughnuts ( I got scared off when i saw the humor blog:)) I was reluctant to host another party on the one night that I thought we could "eat clean". But my kids knew exactly how to get me on board and promised a healthy, calorie conscious meal. The results were amazing! We threw together a fabulous party and had a blast. And yes everyone left full and had fun!

Here's what we did. For the decor we made a menorah centerpiece featuring a salad bar. I used my highball glasses and filled 8 of them with salad vegetables and a dressing. For the shamash I used a cylinder vase and filled it with romaine lettuce. We kept the menu simple and sat down straight to a split pea soup.

While everyone was taking apart my menorah decor and filling up on their salad preferences, we plated the mains. Chicken finger marinade with broccoli, baby corn and mushrooms.

Our dessert worked out great too. We served baked apple and pear, hot pretzel nibs and cut fruit. I put a platter of dreidel cookies in the center of the table. It was barely touched and here's why.

We played a game that kept our hands completely out of the food!! It was a memory game with pairs of socks on everyone's hand. You pick 2 unmatched socks and wear it on your hands.

All hands must remain under the table so no one can see your socks, lest they discover a pair!!

Then you play basic memory where everyone gets a turn to choose 2 hands that must reveal their sock. Basically we were sitting around a table of food and no one was able to use their hands to take anything to eat for the 20 minute duration of the game for fear of revealing their socks. LOL! How's that for a dietetic dessert!!

So have a freilichin chanukah! It can be done!!
